  1.                          WELCOME TO FOCKE'S-CUT
  2.  
  3. INTRODUCTION:
  4. -------------
  5.  
  6. In case you aren't familiar with what is known as the Focke directory 
  7. it is a listing of Washington Metropolitan Area (WMA) bulletin board 
  8. systems (BBSs) and it is updated monthly.  The listing is arranged 
  9. into categories: active BBSs within the WMA are listed by area 
  10. (DC.DIR, MD.DIR, and VA.DIR) as are active BBSs outside of the WMA 
  11. (NMMD.DIR and NMVA.DIR).  In addition, BBSs that are 'down' are in a 
  12. list (DOWN.DIR) and BBSs that provide user support for software 
  13. products, hardware products, etc. are provided in a listing 
  14. (SUPPORT.DIR).

  16. To date, users have had no convenient way of determining which of the 
  17. BBSs listed would be a local call - particularly true for those 
  18. numbers beyond the WMA.  That is a problem that Focke's-Cut is 
  19. designed to solve.  
  20.  
  21. The program was originally designed to help only BBS users beyond the 
  22. WMA determine which of the Focke listed BBSs would be a local call.  
  23. Howver, during program development, it became obvious that the program 
  24. could be expanded to provide this capability to all BBS users within 
  25. or nearby the WMA.  
  26.  
  27.  
  28. PROGRAM FEATURES:
  29. -----------------
  30.  
  31.   1. Focke BBS files can be used to create a listing of BBSs within 
  32.      YOUR local calling area.  (Due to on-going changes in the
  33.      telephone system, there can be no guarantee given that the list
  34.      of numbers that results is 100% accurate.  If you call the BBSs
  35.      listed, a simple test of whether or not the number is local is to
  36.      make sure you do not include the long distance prefix '1' on the
  37.      number when you call!  Virginia residents should take care to
  38.      check numbers for extended area calling rates.)
  39.  
  40.   2. You can look up a local BBS and get its telephone number.
  41.  
  42.   3. You can search the Focke's-Cut database to determine if your 
  43.      local exchange is included.  (If yours is not included, there may 
  44.      be several reasons:  1) periodic changes in the telephone system, 
  45.      2) you are in an area outside the WMA that has not been included, 
  46.      and 3) database errors or omissions!  The database is intended to 
  47.      include all exchanges within a 'reasonable' distance from the 
  48.      center of Washington, D.C.  In any event, if your exchange was 
  49.      missed or if you feel that it should be included - write!  The 
  50.      address is given below.  Be advised however, there is no 
  51.      guarantee that your exchange will be included in the next 
  52.      program/database update.)

  54.   4. You can view all of the calling areas and numbers included in 
  55.      Focke's-Cut's WMA telephone exchange database.
  56.  
  57. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
  58. ---------------------

  60. Running Focke's-Cut requires two files: 
  61.  
  62.            1. FOCKESCT.EXE  
  63.            2. AREASFC.001
  64.  
  65. In addition, full use of the program requires that you obtain the 
  66. Focke directory described earlier.  This directory is updated monthly 
  67. and is released as a ZIP file having the structure DCBBmmyy.ZIP where 
  68. mm is the current month and yy is the current year.  When this file is 
  69. unzipped, it yield several files.  Those that are needed for this 
  70. program are: 
  71.  
  72.            1. DC.DIR    (DC DIRectory)
  73.            2. MD.DIR    (Maryland DIRectory)
  74.            3. VA.DIR    (Virginia DIRectory)
  75.            4. NMMD.DIR  (Non-Metro Maryland DIRectory)
  76.            5. NMVA.DIR  (Non-Metro Virginia DIRectory)

  79. STARTING FOCKE'S-CUT:
  80. --------------------

  82. When starting the program up, you can enter the following command line 
  83. parameters (note that they are not case sensitive): 
  84.  
  85. /A() - This allows you to tell the program where to find the 
  86.        AREASFC.001 file if it is not in the default directory. If you 
  87.        don't use this command and the program can't find the file, it 
  88.        will ask you where it is to be found.  
  89.  
  90. /F() - This allows you to tell the program where the Focke DIR files 
  91.        can be found.  Again, if the program can't find the files, it 
  92.        will prompt you to enter the correct path/directory.  
  93.  
  94. /M   - For monochrome monitors should make the screen more readable.  
  95.  
  96. A sample command line is as follows:
  97.  
  98.                       FOCKESCT /Aa: /Fd:

  100. Be sure to leave a space between each of the parameters as shown.  
  101. This sample command line would start the program and tell it that the 
  102. AREASFC.001 file is in the a: drive and that the Focke DIR files are 
  103. in a RAM d: drive (more about the use of RAM drives in a moment.)

  106. USING FOCKE'S-CUT:
  107. ------------------
  108.  
  109. There are several actions you can take to speed the program up and 
  110. things you should know about how it operates: 
  111.  
  112.   1. If at all possible, copy the Focke DIR files listed above to a 
  113.      RAM disk.  This will speed the program up considerably when you 
  114.      begin searches for BBSs within your calling area or for BBS 
  115.      names.  
  116.  
  117.   2. You will note that on yes/no questions, the letters Y and N are 
  118.      written to the screen and either the Y or the N is uppercase and 
  119.      highlighted.  Pressing the <ENTER> key will automatically choose 
  120.      the emphasized option.  You can still choose the option by letter 
  121.      and can, of course, select the non-emphasized option by pressing 
  122.      the appropriate letter.

  124.   3. When searching for a BBS, remember that the first search looks 
  125.      for the EXACT occurrence of the text you enter.  For example, if 
  126.      you entered 'Dark Forest,' the program might find 'The Dark 
  127.      Forest' and 'Dark Forest Lands.'  If the actual name of the BBS 
  128.      was 'Darkforest,' the program would not identify it.  However, 
  129.      the program would then ask you if you want to search for all BBSs 
  130.      having any of the words you have specified.  If you answer 'Y' 
  131.      (or press <ENTER>) it will search for any BBS having the words 
  132.      'Dark' or 'Forest.'  The program would then identify all of the
  133.      BBSs named in this example during the search.

  135.      During a word search, keep in mind that the program will not
  136.      search for matches to 'trivial' words such as AN, AT, IN, IS, OF,
  137.      ON, OR, THE, or TO, nor will it search for single letters.  This
  138.      helps eliminate scores of unwanted BBSs during searches.  Also, 
  139.      no matter what the search level, the area you specify before the
  140.      search begins is the only one searched.  E.g., if you specify that
  141.      you think that the BBS is in Virginia, the program will search
  142.      only the VA.DIR and NMVA.DIR Focke files.  If you aren't really
  143.      sure of the BBS's location, choose the last option - 'I Don't
  144.      Know.'  This will cause ALL of the Focke DIR files to be searched
  145.      but will of course take a little longer. (especially if you are not
  146.      using a RAM drive!)

  167. Focke's-Cut is a shareware program and is provided to you at no charge 
  168. for evaluation.  However, if you find this program useful and use it 
  169. beyond a fifteen day evaluation period, you must make a $5.00 
  170. registration payment.  Note that this registration cost covers 
  171. Focke's-Cut version 1.0 and ANY FUTURE VERSIONS of the Focke's-Cut 
  172. program that are released!  (Focke's-Cut is defined as that software 
  173. product specifically named FOCKESCT.EXE, being known as Focke's-Cut, 
  174. and using the Focke directory listings as an input database for 
  175. identification of Washington Metropolitan Area bulletin board systems.  
  176. This offer does not apply to other software programs that provide 
  177. similar features nor is it applicable or transferrable to any other 
  178. program that utilizes the WMA calling directory database used in 
  179. Focke's-Cut.)

  191. number of computers as long as you are the sole user of the installed 
  192. program and as long as there is no possibility of it being used at one 
  193. location while it's being used at another.  You are also authorized to 
  194. make archival copies of the software for the sole purpose of ensuring 
  195. that you do not lose a working copy.
